Maths

Our aim is for students to leave WBVS confident in maths; equipped with strong procedural and conceptual understanding for future education and for life.

Our curriculum aims to equip students to move fluently between topics in mathematics, as well as being able to see and make connections. These connections could be between topics in maths or across other subjects such as science and geography. Students will develop problem solving and critical thinking skills, as well as develop their literacy skills through the learning of key words and their origins.

Throughout KS3 and KS4 students will study a range of topics within the overarching themes of Number, Algebra, Ratio and Proportion, Shape and Measure, and Probability and Statistics.

At GCSE, students will take three papers, one non-calculator and two calculator papers, each containing 80 marks, and each lasting 1 hour 30 minutes. They will receive a grade based on the total from all three papers. The exam board for mathematics is Edexcel. Students will be entered for either the Foundation tier (grades 1-5) or the Higher tier (grades 4-9).

During KS4, students may have the opportunity to study towards an additional qualification, such as the FSMQ (Free Standing Mathematics Qualification), if appropriate for the individual.

Students are required to bring a scientific calculator with them to school – we recommend the Casio Classwizz FX-83GTCW which is available to purchase on the website (through ParentPay).
